Positional Plagiocephaly- 5 yr. old with moderate occipital flattening
By Tara

Hello Dr. Howell,
Can NCR help a 5 1/2 yr. old boy with moderate flattening of the back of his head? Would we see even small results after a 4 day series? Have you ever treated a child OVER the age of 2 with positional plagicephaly and did you get GOOD results? I'm very close to making an appointment with you--I just need to hear some concrete answers from the creator of this technique before we decide. If you would respond to me, I could send you some "head shot" photos if that would better help you state your opinion.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Tara

Positional Plagiocephaly

NCR has excellent results treating plagiocephaly in people of any age! The speed of the correction is variable with the individual, but I would expect any such person undergoing NCR to notice some changes in the shape of his/her plagiocephalic head.
By the way, I find it interesting that somebody determined that it was “positional” plagiocephaly. I have not found that the parents are the proper people to blame for their children’s plagiocephaly. Please understand that the structural forces that lead to plagiocephaly are not particularly influenced by the sleeping position of the child. With NCR, we treat unusual head shapes without attempting to control the sleeping positions of these people, and their heads still round out.

Plagiocephaly

I sincerely appreciate your response. I think that pedicatricians label the condition "positional plagicephaly" when there has NOT been premature fusion of the sutures. They have no other explanation. I totally agree that the sleep position is not necessarily the cause of plagiocephaly. My son was born by vacuum extraction after pushing for 3 hours. We found out last year that his right clavicle bone was most likely fractured or broken during birth. His clavicle is thicker, protrudes and sets up higher than the other. He did not have normal rotation of his neck while lying down and asleep. Chiropractic care has helped siginificantly with his clavicle lining up, but has a persistent muscle spasm in his right shoulder, same side as injured clavicle.
Thank you for your insight! I will update the forum after we pursue NCR.
Sincerely,
Tara

NCR expands the skull and releases sutures, but can it cause flattened bone to bend?

Hello Dr. Howell,
We are currenly doing NCR with one of the NCR doctors posted on your site. Our son is almost 6 years old with mild plagiocephaly and mild-moderate brachycephaly. He have seen some results with the width of his forehead going in (narrowing), the plagio. anle decreasing (slightly, but obvious to us), and the left temporal bone becoming more symmetric with the right temporal bone. What we have seen the LEAST improvement in is the left side flattened occiput "rounding" out. My question is this: I do believe and understand that NCR does release the sutures and expands the skull. BUT...Can NCR cause a flattened bone to bend, therefore causing some roundness? If the bone grew flat, can the manipulation of the sphenoid really cause a flattened bone to BEND? I do realize that this is a gradual and cumulative therapy, and we are only going on series 3. I would like to have a clear understanding of what NCR CAN and just CANNOT do for plagiocephaly/brachycephaly in an older child. Thanks for taking the time to educate us. There are ALOT of moms out there with similar questions. Thank you.

[Dean Howell, ND] The bones of the body have a “plasticity” where the bones actually bend and flex based on the pressure that is exerted on them. For example, you can make your forearm bend simply by pushing on it.
If the bone grew flat, can the manipulation of the sphenoid really cause a flattened bone to BEND?
[Dean Howell, ND] As the sutures of the skull release, the bones will gradually return to their original design.
I do realize that this is a gradual and cumulative therapy, and we are only going on series 3.
[Dean Howell, ND] Don’t despair. With further treatment, your son will look and feel more and more like the other boys. The children that I have worked with generally get ten or twelve series, and then look pretty good. It is a lot better results, and less cost than the blue helmets that I have seen kids in at the mall.
